Suggestions for photographing work for juried shows:
The internet offers abundant information on hardware--cameras, backdrops, lighting, etc.--but little information on how to frame shots. We offer the following suggestions:
· Focus of the photograph should be on the work. No distracting backgrounds, wrinkled bedsheets, body parts, rulers or props.
· Make sure important functional aspects are included. Example: bowls-interior is seen, mugs-handle is seen.
· Include some "breathing room" around the pot(s)/work, and center work similarly from one photograph to the next.
· Select a group of photographs that demonstrates a cohesive body of work. If you have multiple lines of work, select multiple photos that represent one or two styles of work.
· No "Lifestyle" and pot-in-action shots should be submitted for juried applications.
· Include requested dimension information in your application form.
· Follow photo submission guidelines! Title images as requested, and make sure size and resolution dimensions meet stated requirements.
· Don’t check the box that says your photos meet these guidelines without double (or triple) checking that they do.
· Peruse gallery websites and social media sites for examples of how to frame formal shots; see e.g. https://www.instagram.com/schallergallery/ , https://www.instagram.com/clayakar/ , and https://www.instagram.com/charliecummingsgallery/ .
